OBJECTIVE: The goal for this assignment is to produce 4 pages for any news app which lacked good typography, user-experience and visual design. The four pages created are as followed: Splash page, News landing page, News article page, and navigation overlay.
RESEARCH / OBSERVATIONS Current App: While observing the original Globe & Mail app there were many visual and typographic issues that appeared. The use of type is not consistent and did not obtain a friendly-user experience. There is also a lack of consistency between the text alignment. The original navigation page feels out of place compared to the entire app as a whole. The use of fonts are difficult to read, and there seems to be an exaggerated amount of space between categories, and news articles throughout the app. The logo often disappears throughout multiple pages which lacks a sense of branding. As a whole, it was apparent that there was room for improvement within the globe & mail app.
REFLECTION: My intent for this assignment was to re-create the Globe and Mail app by allowing it to be more sophisticated and user-friendly. The original app design is extremely chaotic, inconsistent and unappealing. This new re-amped design has clean icons, great typographic hierarchy, consistent text alignment, fonts and layout, and continues to promote the Globe & Mail brand much more effectively.
Four pages on the original app. Loss of typographic hierarchy, organization and consitancy.
Simple icons created for the app to create a sense of harmony and ease for the users.
Four final app pages carefully designed for the Globe and Mail.
Editorial Design: Runway Magazine
OVERVIEW: 20-spread Magazine that highlights girl power, achievable full-body workouts, a sport-apparel review and a personal progress story.
OBJECTIVE: The goal for this assignment is to create a 20-spread magazine on a topic we attain an interest in. Being that I am a gymnast and love everything which can promote healthy living, and girl power I decided to use this opportunity to explore a women’s magazine.
RESEARCH / OBSERVATIONS: Current Fitness Magazines: Prior to creating my editorial piece, I analyzed several magazines, specifically fitness and women. What I gathered is that they all obtain an overload of information that viewers do not want to read. They are un-realistic and chaotic in regards to layout, photography and typography. I want to create a piece where it combines both sport apparel as well as fitness. Due to this amazing combination the title of this magazine is called “Runway.”
REFLECTION: I am very content with my successful editorial piece “Runway”, and hope to inspire women to get a jump start on their fitness journey. If I were to take this to the next step I will create more issues related to fitness, health and lifestyle geared towards women. I will also create an online version for those who are not print-lovers, and experiment with an online app with motivational daily quotes, blog-like stories, photo’s, transformation stories etc.
Several logos in process prior to the finalized name and logo.

Branding: Sparkcon Festival
OVERVIEW: Re-branding for a Festival Located in North Carolina: Sparkcon. Posters, Program and webpage mockups created to enhance this festival and
COURSE: Communication design 2 , year 3 TYPE: Advertisement, Branding, Typography TOOLS: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop DURATION: October 2017-December 2017 (2 months).
OBJECTIVE: The intent for this assignment is to chose a festival located in North American and re-brand the original by creating new advertisements, program and webpage mockups.
RESEARCH / OBSERVATIONS: After searching hundreds of festivals in the North American, SPARKcon immediately grasped my attention. The cultural Festival which I will rebrand is called SPARKcon. This festival has been running for the past twelve years in North Carolina, United States. SPARKcon was founded in 2006 by Beth and Aly Khalifa and Designbox to showcase, celebrate, and influence the creative momentum of the Triangle region of North Carolina. SPARKcon could not exist today without their innovative thinking, commitment to our community, and work ethic. SPARKcon is essentially a showcase for all different forms of art. It gathers artists from around the region and allows them to show off their unique talent, whether it may be film, theatre, music etc. The branding for this festival is not terrible, but definitely has room for improvement which is why I took on this challenge to re-brand their event while still obtaining their original identity.
REFLECTION: I am very satisfied with the overall look and feel of the event I re-branded. I believe these new design choices are best suitable for the event because when one envisions art they automatically associate that with colour, vibrance, textures etc. Which is why I want to be able to promote this event by appearing unique, artistically inclined and full of excitement.
These posters took on a different perspective for the event SPARKcon however did not make it to the final deliverable.
This final 20x30" poster encompasses a variety of colours which represent the 12 different events at the festival. It has a sense of vibrance and energy while still remaining organized and legible. This poster speaks volumes to the audience and obtains all significant information in a properly placed typographic manner.
These are mockups of the very first screen you will see when accessing the SPARKcon Festival online. The colours and typography throughout these screens remain consistant similar to the poster, and continue to attain an organized and energetic appeal.
Product Design: MIBI
OVERVIEW: A smart pen designed for elementary students, paired with the MIBIapp, where both teachers and students are able to track their progress and practice writing cursive.
COURSE: Advanced Models and Speculative Interfaces Year 3 TYPE: Product design, UI/UX design, branding, TOOLS: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Invision, Final Cut Pro DURATION: October 2017-December 2017
OBJECTIVE: As a team we must figure out any smart-device by given the topic “education.” Thus leading us to our smart-pen “MIBI.” Mibi is a 3D pen that teaches children how to write in cursive, as well as a corresponding app which can be used in classrooms as practice/tests.
RESEARCH / OBSERVATIONS: With many smart devices already in existent our problem was creating something that has not been done, or enhancing it is new and improved and will do well in the market. Several ideas which we did not go with are:
SOLUTION: After the first round of critique and comments on the ideas pitched for a potential smart device, the group decided to go forth with an educational smart pen. We decided to pursue the development of the smart pen because it is small, improves sensory skills, fits in a pocket, sleek, modern, efficient and possibly inexpensive. With the selection to work towards the design and development of the smart pen, we also decided to combine the smart pen with our initial “what we want to learn” point of learning calligraphy idea. Creating a smart pen that could teach children how to write cursive writing, one that is a form of penmanship that is not taught as often in schools anymore. This resulted and directed our deeper research on smart pen devices and determining the target audience: children ages around 6-10 years old. We aimed our research toward how children learned how to write, what age do children start to write and their learning development of reading and writing.
REFLECTION: This assignment was extremely challenging yet exciting as it was a great opportunity for collaboration and team work. My team and I were constantly brainstorming great ideas, and working together to create something magnificent. Mibi is a fun and creative tool which will excite children to practice and learn cursive through the advancements of technology.
Market analysis - A look into other brands for children: Use of colour, typography etc.
